We are very excited to be inviting an array of incredible artists to our festival in July. The concept is that they all have soul, but not necessarily from the traditional idea of soul music but having soulful elements which resonate with fellow human beings. No AI bots here, but living, breathing, dynamic and relevant musicians.
At festivals you can’t necessarily see everything available, but we have tried to programme the East Devon Soul Festival so that you can take a journey around the town of Seaton, whilst taking a journey through popular music, from jazz roots to infections of ska, additions of electronica and into DnB. DJ’s will be playing soul, funk, house, trance, jungle, grime. You name it. You will hear it.
My journey through the festival is going to be starting on Friday 3rd July at the Old Picture House with the marvellous Rumble-O’s bringing Pulp Fiction vibes and raw energy. DJ’s will be performing across other venues that evening. Saturday 4th July you can wake to the sound of waves, to birdsong, leading to brassy street bands, samba outfits, street musicians bringing a carnival vibe. Gradually the DJ’s will rise from their slumber and bring an Ibiza chillout to dancey vibe, whilst you go for a paddle, or grab a drink on the beach. Late afternoon, head to the town hall for live jazz from the wonderful David Kayode, who starred at Giles Peterson’s We Out Here festival last year. I’ll strap my trombone on for a set with ska legends the Guns of Navarone before the best live DnB band in the world, Dr Meaker, headline the show.
In the meantime, exhilarating live jazz presented by Tomorrow’s Warriors will be occurring at the Tramway. Saxophonist Betty Accorsi, trumpet player Klara Devlin and the amazing Ankora feature the brightest and best young female jazz musicians in the UK today. I know. incredible. Home of Ezra Collective, Nubya Garcia, Moses Boyd, this London jazz agency always produces talent who go on to dominate global music.
Just over the road you will start to hear beautiful electronic beats and visualise rays from the awesome light show of Kayla Painter. An incredible artist who has led the Bristol electronic scene for years. Then festival favourites the Egg will get you nostalgic for parties in fields, Glastonbury, dancey, anthemic music. Finally, rising star Kaya Fyah will see out the live music at the Old Picture House with her spiritual jungle dub set. She is going to be a huge star so catch her while you can. In Seaton. Unreal!
To finish off the day, head to the beach, where DJ’s will be performing at venues overlooking the promenade. Dance, chat, and see us there for an end of festival party.
You can buy tickets for the whole event at just £32 for tier 2 release or pick your individual event from £12.
